Student Performance Opportunities

MMYO Concerts

All seven ensembles perform in two major concerts each year: one in the winter, and one in the spring. Click HERE to view past concerts on YouTube.

Outreach Concerts

MMYO strongly believes in the importance of making music accessible to all audiences. Our ensembles have performed at retirement communities such as Vi at La Jolla Village, Horton Plaza Park, Paradise Village Retirement Community, La Costa Glen, and other community venues throughout San Diego.

Solo Performance Opportunities

Sectionals and Masterclasses with Guest Musicians

MMYO provides numerous sectionals and masterclasses throughout the season to provide students with diverse musical learning experiences. Previous sectionals and masterclasses have featured artists from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra.

Senior Showcase

All current MMYO high school seniors are provided with the opportunity to perform in front of an audience as a soloist or as part of a chamber ensemble during this yearly event. Students are asked to provide their own piano accompaniment.

Rising Stars Recital

Students chosen by Music Director Hernan Constantino are invited to perform as soloists, accompanied by members of the Advanced Orchestra.

Solo Competition

This annual competition is open to all current MMYO strings, winds, and brass students. The mission of our competition is to create a forum for performance opportunities and to inspire young musicians to reach the highest levels of their potential.

There are seven divisions:

  1. Suzuki Comets

  2. Beginning Strings

  3. Intermediate Strings

  4. Intermediate Orchestra – Strings

  5. Intermediate Orchestra/Concert Band – Winds, Brass, & Percussion

  6. Advanced Orchestra – Strings

  7. Advanced Orchestra – Winds, Brass, & Percussion

There are two rounds of auditions. The first round is held through online video auditions, while the second round is held through live auditions judged by guest musicians.

Students chosen as 1st and 2nd place division winners in the second round of auditions will be invited to perform their full movement/piece at the Solo Competition Winners’ Recital. Students are asked to provide their own piano accompaniment.
